Sewing Gift Ideas

It’s difficult at the best of times trying to think of presents to buy at this time of the year, but if there is someone you know who loves to sew then maybe the Sewing Box can help you?

First of all think fabric! The main reason why so many of us take up the hobby is because there is something about it that really becomes addictive, the colour, the feel, the smell. Yes even the smell. It’s part of the whole experience and that’s why sewers usually end up with such large fabric stashes, so you really can’t go wrong with a bundle of fabric. It will always be kept for ‘just the right project’.

Then there are so many sewing notions to choose from, including pretty scissors, trims and threads. A box of machine embroidery threads in a range of colours would be more appealing than a box of chocolates (and less fattening). Well both would probably make their day, especially if they drink wine too and you threw in a bottle for a sewing night in front of the TV.

Better than a box of chocs to some.

Pop a few things in a basket and they’ll be thrilled!

But they’ve already got scissors I hear you say? It doesn’t matter, we keep a pair in every bag. We also need fabric scissors and paper scissors in different sizes, then there are the decorative ‘pinking shears’, we do use them all promise! But there is an alternative, what about a little kit. We have some adorable kits which make these little harlequin clowns. The small one can be hung on a pair of scissors, the large can hang in the car? This is something a sewer could make themselves?

We have so many sewing nic nacs here in the shop you could definitely fill a stocking for your mum or sister, we have plenty to choose from and if you are not sure we can help and advise. But speaking of stockings, if you like to sew yourself there is still plenty of time to come along and make your presents. We have amongst others a Christmas stocking class, or maybe you fancy trying your hand at some Christmas bottle bags?

Our ‘Fat Quarter cushion‘ class makes this gorgeous foot pouffe and if you don’t sew but would like to there is still time left to have a machine lesson, so you can come back to make one!

Then if all else fails and you’re still unsure as to what you could give we sell gift vouchers for our shop. I am sure they would be thrilled to receive a Sewing Box gift voucher because walking into a fabric shop gives sewers the same feeling that kids have walking into a sweet shop! If you live out of the area, but your loved one lives close to Durham, buy them here and we will post them to you. The vouchers can also be used towards paying for courses and classes, as they may like to try their hand at something new?

Gift Vouchers for the Sewing Box are now available for buying supplies or booking classes.

And yes by all means, why not book someone onto a class or course? If you know they will be free at a certain time of the day or night, (as we do evening classes too), give them a surprise! Especially if they are going to receive a sewing machine for Christmas it can be quite daunting taking it out of the box! So book them a one-to-one lesson with us, if you cant find a class that suits and we can give them an overview of what to do personally.

I hope this has been of some help? And if you want to come along to the Sewing Box you will find us in Vane Tempest Hall, behind the Queen’s Head pub in Gilesgate, Durham.

But for all of you sewers out there remember Its about 8 weeks now till Christms, so get those homemade gifts started soon!
